‘If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too,’ the Democratic presidential candidate says, sounding a bit Republican
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders is in the spotlight this week with headlines about his large personal fortune. For most of the 77-year-old Vermont socialist’s political career, this is not a sentence you would have ever expected to encounter. He grew up respectably urban poor and his career before politics was pretty ragtag. As a municipal politician he set an example of relative austerity and closeness to the public: the townhouse in Burlington, Vt.
So the Times’ use of the term is a little eccentric. Sanders’ income is pretty well known: in running for president in 2016 he released tax returns up to the reporting year of 2014, and he is subject to financial disclosure as a member of the Senate. The NYT’s evidence that the senator is a millionaire is that he is known to have earned one million dollars in a single year, 2016 — and he repeated the trick, barely, in 2017.
Obviously this may have been a bit of a glib poke at a room full of working journalists, i.e., writers. But Bernie does have leftist critics, and always has. It is not as though he gave away the million bucks: he has added a Washington pad and a Vermont lakefront cottage to the place in Burlington.
