This was in response to concerns raised by Mitchells Plain residents last week. The community submitted a memorandum of demands calling for, among others, the cutting of electricity costs for poor households.
CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has pointed to Eskom as the primary driver of high electricity costs. The community submitted a memorandum of demands calling for, among others, the cutting of electricity costs for poor households.
However, the city responded, citing that someone had to pay for operation and service costs to cover the utility’s tariff hike. Residents’ representative, Natasha Gertse, said that the city's response demonstrated a total disregard for their plight. "The main factor for this City of Cape Town is to generate an income revenue and the suffering of our people is not one of their priorities."
Gertse added that the next step was to take the municipality to court for high service rates and poor service delivery in disadvantaged communities.
