HM Coastguard and Police Scotland helped free the cars alongside local authority gritters.

HM Coastguard for Shetland and Orkney were alerted to the motorists stuck in the snow on Monday, December 12, in the Kames and Tresta areas. Alongside cops they used off-road vehicles to reach them and cleared the snow blocking all the drivers.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Shetland and Orkney said: "Coastguard Rescue teams from Sumburgh, Lerwick, Walls, Hillswick & Mid Yell were all tasked yesterday evening to support Police Scotland due to the adverse weather conditions."The teams were able to use their 4x4’s to reach stranded motorists and check on their welfare, taking them to a place of safety if necessary.
