The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , defines the waterspout as a "funnel which contains an intense vortex, sometimes destructive, of small horizontal extent and which occurs over a body of water."The National Weather Service says waterspouts are more common over South Florida’s coastal waters from late spring to early fall.
While a beautiful sight, the NWS warns the public not to get close to a waterspout, since some can be as dangerous as tornadoes. The Palm Beach Police Department said while fortunate these weather events should be viewed at a safe distance.
