Though far from a record, the Mobile region has received over 10 inches of rain during the month of August, which is over 4 inches above normal.

Utilities throughout South Alabama have been reporting sanitary sewer overflows amid heavy rainfall that has happened throughout the past couple of weeks.

Riviera Utilities, in a news release, urged residents to exercise caution using “these bodies of water for recreational purposes” and for residents to “thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught in these areas” and to “thoroughly wash their hands after handling any fish or seafood from these areas. Some locations along the coast in Baldwin and Mobile counties have recorded around 20 inches for the month. In Bayou La Batre, the utilities board reported a SSO on Thursday due to heavy rainfall flooding the southern part of the sewer system, while power outages in the north part caused multiple SSOs.

The Prichard Water Works & Sewer Board placed sigs at 10 different locations on Friday to notify the public of SSOs, and the public hazards they can bring. At least five locations had ongoing SSOs on Friday, according to a news release issued by the Mobile County Public Health Department.
