A severe downwind nearly pushed a Coast Guard helicopter into the Gulf of Mexico as it attempted to rescue a cruise ship passenger in need of medical attention Saturday.

Coast Guard personnel had to abort a first attempt to rescue a cruise ship passenger off the coast of Alabama due to severe weather before another crew returned to complete the rescue.

The Jayhawk arrived at the location, about 300 miles off Fort Morgan. During the rescue attempt, as the rescue crew was hoisting a cruise ship nurse, a severe squall forced the crew to move the Jayhawk away from the ship. Both the Jayhawk and Ocean Sentry were forced to return to base due to the severe weather conditions, but another Jayhawk rescue crew would return to ship later and rescued both the patient and Coast Guard rescue swimmer, who had been left aboard the ship when the first Jayhawk was forced to abort the rescue attempt.

“Through exceptional real-time risk management, crew resource management, and superb piloting, the aircrew was able to safely recover the aircraft and land at the air station without further incident.”

A tense week at sea as Philippine coast guard faces ChinaA tense week at sea as Philippine coast guard faces ChinaWhen two Philippine coast guard vessels set out to patrol the volatile South China Sea recently, they had to face more than China’s growing territorial ambitions. The Associated Press and three other news agencies were invited to join a 1,670-kilometer (1,038-mile) patrol of one of the world’s most fiercely contested seas. Arrayed against far larger and more powerful fleets of Chinese coast guard vessels, navy warships and seaborne militias, the Philippine coast guard says its patrol vessels often face David and Goliath confrontations. But the voyage also provided a glimpse of what it's like for Filipino coast guard personnel to work on the frontlines of multiple geopolitical conflicts, while facing a constant battle against sun, sea, stress and gnawing isolation.
