The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service have paid tribute to one of their Crew Commanders who postponed his retirement party to assist in the rescue of 28 calves who were trapped in a slurry tank.
Despite not being expected to attend the call, John insisted on cancelling the get together and joining his colleagues for one last rescue mission.Posting on social media, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "It was John’s last drill night at Newcastle and his colleagues and Officers planned to gather together at the Station to mark his retirement.
"As Newcastle is one of our Animal Rescue Stations they were tasked to the incident along with a number of officers who were due to attend John’s retirement, and so disrupting the farewell event. John's retirement celebrations have been rearranged to next week where he will be joined by his colleague to mark the end of his incredible career.
