A mink, dubbed an 'invasive' species has killed four out of five hens in a grandmother's back garden

A grandmother's hens have come to a tragic end after an invasive wild animal caused a 'brutal massacre'. For several years, Carol Schofield has looked after former battery hens in her garden in Stubbins, Ramsbottom, that was affectionately dubbed 'Cluckingham Palace'.

She told the MEN: "I've had hens for years. They've been kept down the bottom of the garden, more or less at the river, all these years, I've never had any problems at all. Sadly, on a quiet Tuesday, tragedy struck and a mink killed two of her hens before hiding the other two in the bushes to kill later. "It's horrible," she added.

A friend of Carol's had 60 hens "obliterated" by a mink earlier this year, while others have reported similar incidents. The grandmother is now letting go of her last surviving hen.
