Forecasters say the gloomy weather pattern in early May can be blamed on an 'Omega block' in the atmosphere.
— resembling a giant version of the Greek letter Omega — is expected to linger over a wide swath of the northern United States through the middle of this week, locking in damp and chilly weather conditions in the New Jersey region and other parts of the Northeast.
A jet stream pattern, known as an "Omega block" because its shape resembles the Greek letter Omega, will remain over much of the northern United States through the middle of this week. Warmer and drier air is expected to return this weekend. But before the weekend arrives, we have to cope with a few more days of heavy cloud cover, cool temperatures in the 50s and occasional rain showers.
Our region of the country happens to be in one of the sectors with the chilly, unsettled conditions, because of a low pressure system in the middle to upper level of the atmosphere that has stalled out over the Great Lakes region, the National Weather Service noted.
