People paying their respects to SCDF officer CPT Kenneth Tay Xue Qin at his wake held on May 17, 2024. SINGAPORE: A"close-knit" community of Singapore Civil Defence Force officers joined family and friends of Captain Kenneth Tay Xue Qin to pay their respects at his wake on Friday evening.
Dozens of CPT Tay's colleagues from SCDF arrived early. One officer, who declined to be named, described them as a"close-knit" community who would support each other. "Rota commanders lead a team of frontline officers to respond to incidents, to protect the public," he said. With the agreement of CPT Tay's family, a ceremonial funeral will be held to honour him, the SCDF previously said.He expressed a strong interest in specialising in marine firefighting, and started serving at West Coast Marine Fire Station on Dec 16, 2023.During the firefighting operation, CPT Tay was with another firefighter in the smoke-logged engine room at about 3.30am.
At about 4am, he was found lying at the bottom of a staircase that led down to a lower platform of the engine room.
