Climate 'loss and damage' talks stall on definition

Negotiations on the crucial issue of loss and damage continued at the start of the week following the wake of hitting a snag last week after parties couldn’t agree on some of the wording included in this agreement.

Speaking at the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment meeting ahead of this week’s talks, South Africa’s minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment Barbara Creecy said developed nations had to shoulder some of the responsibility that they have after using fossil fuels to develop their economies at the expense of the climate and less-developed and developing nations that were now feeling the impact of climate change.

Despite the failure of developed countries to honour financial agreements and thus putting into jeopardy the achievement of set ambitions by 2030, the African group of environmental ministers were hopeful that including loss and damage on the agenda would help poorer and developing nations that have been battered by the effects of climate change to get something towards the loss and damage they had suffered.

“We appreciate the tireless effort of the African group of negotiators to negotiate in the interest of African priorities. This has to be reinforced in Africa’s global representation and voice in line with the AU reforms and agenda 2063. Several contentious issues need further impetus, including loss and damage to economical joint work on agriculture financing and adaptation, which is critical centrality to Africa’s presence in these negotiations.
