Ottawa-Global food insecurity is being worsened by damaging weather events caused by climate change, says Margaret Zafiriou, Research Associate with the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute .

Sustainable agriculture productivity growth is key to both addressing climate change and global food security concerns in the future, she said. Global agricultural productivity growth slowed between 2011 and 2020 to 1.12 per cent per year from 1.99 per cent per year in the previous decade. The impact of climate change is greater in warmer countries than in northern regions like Canada. It “leads to more frequent, extreme weather events, such as droughts, storms, flooding and heat waves causing wildfires, deaths, infrastructure damage and insurance losses,” Zafiriou said.

“The flood of floods in British Columbia in November 2021 halted rail deliveries to the port of Vancouver and saw roads and bridges washed out with death and destruction. 2022 also had its share of extreme weather events. Who had heard of a Derecho before it hit Ontario and Quebec in May 2022?”
