Cleveland police, troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers made 43 felony arrests in Cleveland last week.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland police and troopers of the Ohio State Highway Patrol made 43 felony arrests in a two-day sweep last week, the latest attempt to reduce violence in the city, authorities said.

The officers, working with other state law enforcement officials, also seized 27 guns that people possessed illegally, authorities say. In addition, the officers recovered six stolen vehicles. The arrests took place Sept. 21-22 in Cleveland’s Third and Fifth districts.Officers from the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and the Ohio Department of Youth Services assisted in the arrests.

This is the fourth crackdown in which Ohio law enforcement officers have made arrests and seized guns and illegal narcotics. Gov. Mike DeWine ordered the state officers to work in Cleveland after the city asked for help in July. The request came as gun crimes, homicides and carjackings spiked. Cleveland police, however, face a shortage of more than 200 officers in a department that has about 1,350.
