Following significant renovation to its pipe organ this summer, the Cleveland Orchestra is once again able to freely program and play its historic instrument.
During every recent concert involving the organ, “I’d be up there behind stage, just as nervous as any musician,” Mercer said. “It had gotten to the point that we weren’t programming for the instrument.The problem, like so many these days, was one of technology.
“It was cut off almost entirely,” concurred Todd Wilson, the orchestra’s longtime organ curator and organ department head at the Cleveland Institute of Music. “You could play as loudly as possible, and people would still barely be able to hear anything.” Scrapping or rebuilding the instrument, one of the largest intact Skinner organs in the country, were never options.
Respectful of the instrument’s historic status, the orchestra preserved the console’s original wooden case. Inside, though, it installed new keyboards and new electronics, including a sequencer, transposer, and auto sustainer.
