Clear Lake High School graduating seniors attend a graduation ceremony at Clear Creek ISD's Challenger Columbia Stadium. The district is set to vote on a proposed policy change regarding students' class ranking. In the interest of encouraging high school students to choose courses based on interests and college aspirations rather than just class ranking, Clear Creek ISD trustees are set to vote Monday on a proposal to change the ranking system.

“This change aligns with what we’ve heard from college admissions officers and what they say they view as important during the college admission process,” said Dava West, the district's director of counseling and students services. “They want to see students’ interest in whatever major they want to take on their transcript, and we think this change will really encourage that.”

Currently, students seeking a high class ranking might feel compelled to take as many weighted or advanced-level courses as possible in hopes of boosting their GPA and class rank, often sacrificing classes such as choir, art or even career-and-technical education courses that could lead to industry certifications or a head start to a potential college major.

She said this also appeals to college admissions officers who look favorably at applicants with leadership skills, such as captains of sports teams or leaders of the marching band, and kids who display a commitment such as those who participated in choir all four years of high school.
