Croatian police say that traces of a cleaning agent have been found in the fizzy drink served to a man in Croatia whose hospitalization with a throat injury triggered alarm across the country.

A shelf emptied of CocaCola drinks is seen at a grocery shop in Zagreb, Croatia, Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023. Authorities in Croatia on Wednesday recommended people drink only tap water as they investigated reports of several cases of people getting sick and suffering injuries allegedly after consuming bottled beverages. They did not say which products were being withdrawn, but photos on social media from shops suggested they were Coca-Cola brands.

The incident triggered alarm throughout Croatia, with dozens of people complaining of similar problems in recent days, but authorities have said no serious injuries have been detected. Police did not identify the drink, but previous reports said that the man hospitalized in Rijeka over the weekend with an esophagus injury had been drinking Romerquelle Emotion Blueberry Pomegranate, a Coca-Cola brand, from a glass bottle.

The substance was “either planted or was an unintentional mistake,” said Beros. ”It is hard to say how it happened.”
