“Children deserve to be in school, and further strike action is simply unforgivable, especially after everything children have been through because of the pandemic. "The union is calling for an above inflation pay rise for teachers, which is fully-funded by the government - meaning it doesn't eat into existing school budgets.
The union says that the situation is also leading to a 'brain drain' in teaching, with schools struggle to recruit and retian staff.Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary, said: “But we do believe we’re taking action with a moral purpose of trying to get the Government to invest in their children’s education.”A number of schools are closing their doors fully today while the strike takes place - including three in Wigan, and two in Rochdale.ShareMore than 200,000 NEU members are expected to walk out over the next three days as the union's dispute with government continues.
