Early Music Vancouver and the Vancouver Recital Society jointly present Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Chiaroscuro Quartet in a carefully selected program of Mozart and Schubert.

Tickets and info: $75 at vanrecital.com or earlymusic.bc.ca

Our increasing interest in authentic instrument performances is the raison d’être of this particular EMV/VRS collaboration. Bezuidenhout is a recognized master of the fortepiano, and the Chiaroscuro Quartet has made its reputation by performing on period-appropriate instruments in an historically informed style. So this will be Mozart and Schubert played in a manner that both composers would have recognized.

Then the grand finale: Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K. 414, as adapted by the composer for piano with quartet backup rather than orchestra. It’s a common mistake to say they are more like a harpsichord than a modern piano, in that they can and do produce a full range of dynamics without changes in registration, with lucid and transparent sound. Hmm: Aren’t these words we use to describe Mozart’s music? Give it a listen on fortepiano and decide what an “authentic” instrument brings to the party.
