Classical meets jazz as Houston Symphony to gig with One O'Clock Lab Band

“I’m thrilled that we get to share the stage with them,” he adds. “[It’s two institutions that are really renowned for what they do in their own spheres coming together to put together one show, so I think it's going to be really spectacular.”

Only the program’s very top players make it into the One O’Clock band. Each year the school releases a recording featuring that year’s One O’Clock lineup; to date seven have been nominated for Grammys. Welcoming top jazz artists to campus is also a longstanding UNT tradition, and YouTube is full of A-listers — Sean Jones, Christian McBride, Chuck Findley — sitting in.

The quality of student at North Texas, in the jazz program, blew me away.

“I think we’re extremely lucky in Houston to have musicians who are willing to be experimental, willing to do all genres,” he says. “They’re not so ingrained in their singular culture that they're not willing to do work across the board.”
