is one of the most impressive prospects in the class. Phillips is viewed by many as an exciting and ascending player.
We had the JUGS machine in high school. I’d get in another full practice on the JUGS after a full team practice. I caught over 100 balls every single day. Of course that helped me make the transition to defensive back. Clark Phillips III: I would say I have a high sense of awareness. I understand down and distance, formational tendencies, and so on. The biggest thing was my approach. I try to set goals for myself every season. I always want to take another step forward.
I took a lot of pride in that. I know the amount of hours I put into film study. The amount of work I had to put in to reach this level makes it even sweeter. I had to set curfews and parameters to [watching film] to make sure I get the right amount of sleep. My X-factor would be my instincts and my will to win, that grit factor. I don’t think you can coach that feeling. You can’t measure it.
That’s what coach Whittingham wanted me to do during my first season. My second year, I established myself as that guy. In 2022, I continued to lead and continued to dominate. They wanted me to make big plays and it goes back to the conversation about having six interceptions this past season. Clark Phillips III: Let’s play man coverage! I’m probably going to play an off-read technique in that scenario though. That’s a technique that basically allows me to still read the quarterback. I can jump the hot [route] and play the deep.
Most of the guys I’ve covered have been over 6-feet tall. You can turn on the film and compare it to the film of any other corner in the 2023 NFL Draft. Tell me how many times I’ve gotten mossed? The answer is zero. That’s how I respond to the size question if a team asks about it. We can play the hypotheticals and say this or that could happen. Sure, but let’s turn on the film and analyze whatTeams threw it up all the time against me. They tried to test the little corner.
I played him totally differently in the second game from the first game. That’s why I love bringing it up. I feel like I got to showcase my football IQ to NFL teams throughout those games. I’m not a one-dimensional player. I can do a lot of things. JM: Do you approach bigger, more physical cornerbacks in coverage differently than you do smaller, shiftier ones?
