Manchester City remain third in the Premier League with nine games to go after limping to a goalless draw with a defensive Arsenal at the Etihad.
So on it goes. A three-way title race that looks likely to go the distance remains as tense as it did before the Easter weekend, if not quite as tight after a perfect Sunday for Liverpool.
Liverpool and Arsenal were beaten 4-1 in the space of a month, Bayern Munich went down 3-0 and Real Madrid 4-0. But so far this has been a campaign lacking those kinds of statement wins. There had been a defeat at the Emirates and two draws with Liverpool. This time they aren't going away. And this performance on a huge afternoon proved it. We might not see all three title challengers playing on the same day again until the final day of the season and who knows what the equation will be then, so it was understandable that it was being billed as a potentially vital day in the race.
That show of defiance was removed by the stewards before kick-off and the Etihad soon found its voice, fired up by Arsenal's persistent fouling and delaying tactics, but that killed any rhythm in the game as a consequence. City looked to have taken it to heart and sought to fight fire with fire. Both teams exchanged kicks and fouls and the contest for possession brought the crowd back into it. The approach had allowed Arsenal to settle, however. Jesus was inches away from sliding in to convert a low cross from Bukayo Saka.
