City committee OKs $2.46 million for 24/7 mental health crisis response team in Ottawa.
“This frees up police to do what they’re supposed to do,” said committee chair and Orléans West-Innes Coun. Laura Dudas, while Bay Ward Coun. Theresa Kavanagh noted that “the bang for the buck is pretty good.”
The push to divert police from mental health calls stems in part from the demands of Black Lives Matter protests that exploded after high-profile police killings in the U.S. and two deaths of racialized, mentally ill men in Ottawa — Abdirahman Abdi and Greg Ritchie — who died in confrontations with police.
