City Press DStv Premiership best 11: Tough choice to pick top PSL back four: Picking the defenders who stood out this season is a challenging task, but Lovers Mohlala reckons two Mamelodi Sundowns players should automatically make the list

Picking the defenders who stood out in the DStv Premiership this season is a challenging task, but Lovers Mohlala reckons two Mamelodi Sundowns players should automatically make the list.

Mohlala says Grant Kekana and Khuliso Mudau had no competition from other defenders in their central and right back positions: The problem, says Mohlala, is that teams were not consistent in their selections: “Some were converted [to defenders], while others were played out of their normal positions, so it’s difficult to come up with a solid team.

“Whenever Maela played, he did well, although sometimes he was deployed as a centre back. It shows a lack of consistency from our club,” argues Mohlala, one of the best left backs of his generation.I wouldn’t have him in my team as a defender. He was exposed in so many games and it shows that he is not a natural defender.

“For the right back position, Mudau takes the cake ahead of Nyiko Mobbie [of Sekhukhune United] and Modiba, who also gets the nod, depending on the number of games he has played, ahead of [Paseka] Mako [of Orlando Pirates].” He was rock solid for the club and it showed after his passing that the club could not cope without him. Mtolo died in March after collapsing during training. As for Hanamub, he is one of the most underrated defenders around, but he was outstanding and consistent this season.
