Soweto will soon be getting electricity directly from the City of Johannesburg.
The city is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding and later an agreement with Eskom in the coming weeks, paving the way for City Power to take over electricity infrastructure from the power utility.
Moerane said that there were other areas included in the takeover deal such as Sandton, Orange Farm, Finetown, Ivory Park and Diepsloot, which will also no longer receive electricity directly from Eskom.Until recently, Soweto residents owed Eskom R12bn in unpaid bills. Through negotiations with the city, R5bn of this debt was written off in the past financial year.
“In terms of service delivery, we do everything in Soweto, it’s only electricity that we don’t supply.” “The City of Johannesburg has approached Eskom on this issue. Exploratory discussions between the parties are ongoing. At an appropriate time, and as discussions advance, Eskom will ensure that all relevant stakeholders are engaged and form part of the process,” Mantshantsha said.
For Soweto, Moerane said they had a few strategies aimed at easing the financial burden on the residents including introducing prepaid smart meters and what he termed an “energy mix” that will see other forms of energy being used in the area, including solar and gas.
