City Power has warned residents with bypassed electricity meters that they face a R14,000 fine if caught. This follows a statement by the municipal utility’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, who said that City Power had been lenient towards those who had previously been found to have been bypassing their meters. Eskom also recently appealed to South Africans who consume electricity without paying, termed 'zero buyers', to come forward and update their meters.

City Power has warned that residents with bypassed electricity metres will face a R14,000 fine if caught, EWNThis follows a statement by the municipal utility’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, who said that City Power had been lenient towards those who had previously been found to have been bypassing their meters.

During the first phase of the KRN 2 programme, roughly 400,000 of these zero buyers became paying customers, leaving 1.7 million people who did not come forward. Despite zero buyers receiving a grace period, Eskom said it had issued over 100,000 fines for electricity theft in the months following the rollover.Eskom told MyBroadband a “normal” household was fined about R6,052.30 for their first tampering violation. For a repeat offender, the second fine is doubled to R12,104.60.

“We plan to work alongside municipalities as many instances of illegal connections need to be formalised.” These connections can include siphoning electricity from the grid by connecting to transformers or bypassing electricity meters.due to illegal connections and related crimes during the 2022/23 financial year. However, 1,111 people were arrested during the same period for these offences.
