City Power has confirmed its intention to appeal a recent court ruling that mandates the payment of its

to Eskom. This decision follows a judgment that rejected the City of Johannesburg’s argument regarding allegedly unfair electricity price hikes by Eskom.Since October of last year, both Johannesburg and its power utility, City Power, have been defaulting on their payments to Eskom. This ongoing issue prompted Eskom to issue a letter on Thursday night, demanding the settlement of the outstanding arrears by the close of business on Friday.

The court ordered the payment of R1.073 billion, due by the end of March, in favour of Eskom. Eskom stated that this amount has since increased to R3.4 billion by June. by 21 June, and we hope they will respect the court decision and settle all outstanding debts to Eskom,” Eskom said in a statement. In response to the court’s decision, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena expressed the utility’s disagreement and intention to appeal.

“We have noted the judgment in the case between Eskom and City Power that was issued yesterday. We obviously do not agree with it, and we reserve the right to appeal such judgment,” Mangena stated. He added that the entity has already briefed its attorneys and will release a detailed statement outlining their next steps.
