“The Solid Waste Management Department has been impacted by the national driver shortage, causing vacancies within our recycling and yard waste collections,” the department announced Friday in. “Yard waste services will experience service interruptions for the week of 10/10 – 10/17, therefore please utilize one of the six Neighborhoods Depositories to dispose of your yard waste.”
In addition to the bad news about yard waste pickups, residents should be prepared to leave recycling bins at the curb for more than one day, as recycling services experience further delays this week. "We are working to complete these routes," the department wrote on Facebook."Leave your container at the curb."In the first half of 2022, the department had only about 390 full-time staff members, compared with 439 at the beginning of Mayor Sylvester Turner’s first term in 2016, according to the city’s monthly financial reports.
Because the department barely has enough drivers to cover the 181 daily pickup routes, staff in charge of collecting yard waste, recycling and heavy trash often have to leave their posts to take care of regular trash bins, the Houston Chronicle
