A City of Fairbanks ordinance passed Monday will expand traffic-related powers of two public officials and codify increased discretion for Fairbanks drivers during certain traffic stops.

Pristash explained the city engineer is already responsible for erecting and tracking parking signs as well as running the permitting for city right-of-ways. “The idea is not to be Draconian and start towing everybody. The idea is to be responsive if there’s a real safety issue or if someone is ignoring us,” he said.
If no one is available, the driver can select the towing company of their choice to take their vehicle. There are some exceptions, however. Those driving under the influence of drugs, over legal alcohol limits or who refuse to do a chemical test will not get the guarantee of this added discretion, nor will people driving without insurance or a valid license.
