With volunteer firefighter numbers lagging behind targets, the City of Greater Sudbury is investigating the introduction of alternative service levels in outlying communities

It’s better to have someone with limited firefighting capabilities respond to a fire quickly than no response coming until a fully trained firefighter crew arrives several minutes later.

“In the immediacy, the urgency of a fire ... we’re giving them the opportunity to contain it so it’s not spreading, until backup comes.” City Fire and Paramedic Services Chief Joseph Nicholls confirmed that Greater Sudbury’s firefighters are all trained to a full-service level, which includes interior attack, automotive extraction and hazmat.

Further, the number of volunteer firefighters has dropped by approximately 40 per cent in the past decade. Many volunteer firefighters have day jobs and cannot meet these requirements, Labbée said, noting that stations like Beaver Lake are no longer able to respond to calls due to low volunteerism. As such, residents in the area have to wait longer periods of time for emergency services, with the initial crew coming from several kilometres down the road in Whitefish.
