THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s city council has voted unanimously to award itself a historically large pay hike, responding to a year of surging inflation, with some suggesting the city should consider increasing councillors' compensation further.
Smaller increases have sometimes prompted hand-wringing at council in the past, but on Monday, councillors loudly defended their compensation. “It’s important to know out there, I think there’s a lot of appreciation for what council does," he said, adding residents believe "the compensation is low for the amount of hours" and saying he himself works 80 to 90 hours per week.
Council briefly departed from the policy in 2020, choosing to forego a 0.5 per cent increase in a move meant to recognize the financial challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a brief report accompanying Monday’s recommendation, staff noted the policy was approved by council after a process that included public consultation and an assessment of compensation in comparable municipalities.
