David Mellen says being able to set a balanced four-year budget is a key concern.
Nottingham City Council is "working hard" to avoid commissioners being sent in to run it ahead of an imminent update from the Government on its progress. Following issues including the collapse of Robin Hood Energy and the misspending of over £40 million in housing money, the Government sent an Improvement and Assurance Board of three independent experts to monitor financial and cultural improvements at Nottingham City Council.
The IAB has been sending quarterly reports to the Government, with a minister then issuing a public response outlining whether the IAB will continue its work as normal or whether commissioners will be sent in. The IAB delivered its latest report at the end of June, which will be published when the Government also issues its response, expected in October.
Councillor Mellen responded by saying: "Can I predict what the Conservative minister is going to do next month? No I can't, I think clearly it was a three-year involvement for the IAB, it's now been extended to next October. The Government gave the IAB more powers last year, meaning that it can now direct rather than guide the council's improvement activities. Councillor Mellen said it was "not difficult to guess" the main concerns of Sir Tony Redmond, the Chair of the IAB.
