Cape Town police are investigating the origin and circumstances surrounding an extortion note that circulated on social media yesterday.The note warns residents against paying supposed ‘tax collectors’ and threatening violence against the Somalian community:that the South African Police Service is aware of the extortion note circulated in areas such as Philippi East.
‘Extortion is amongst the top crime priorities in the Western Cape and every endeavour is made to combat and root out the phenomena,’ he said. ‘A Provincial Extortion Task Team was established and their investigations have proved to be fruitful with many successful cases brought before courts.’‘As extortion modi operandi are often area-based, local station commanders are conducting unique crime-fighting initiatives and operations in their precincts to address the various forms for maximum impact,’ he added.
Victims or any person who is aware of extortion-related crime are encouraged to report it to the Extortion Hotline on 0800 314444 so that an investigation can be initiated.
