Happy St. Peter’s Day! Peacocks upset No. 2 Kentucky in NCAA shocker
Coach Shaheen Holloway preached depth and defense all season with his No. 15 Peacocks, and both elements of the program he built the last four years proved the difference against No. 2 Kentucky Thursday night.
“It’s huge,” Banks said. “We’re putting Jersey City on the map. We come from Jersey, a small school, probably a lot of people don’t even know who we are.” Reserve guard Doug Edert, who scored 20 points on everything from 3-pointers to floaters, applied the finishing touch with seven seconds remaining as he hit both free throws to close out the historic win.
Using a zone defense at the end of regulation and in overtime, St. Peter’s stifled the Wildcats, who made only one of their six free throws in the extra session. “It was an amazing feeling,” Banks said. “You grow up you watching March Madness, the tournament, so to let that sink in — knowing the game was over — it felt really good.”
Foul trouble handicapped the Peacocks early. Ndefo, who fouled out of the MAAC Championship Saturday, picked up two fouls in the first 90 seconds of the game. He returned to show a national audience why he earned MAAC defensive player of the year honors for the third consecutive season with two key blocks.
