People can start applying for council seat starting Friday. The City Council has until early February to appoint someone.
The Chula Vista City Council unanimously decided Tuesday to appoint someone to the District 3 seat and to hold a special election next year for the city attorney’s post.
Voters elected Simon Silva as city attorney, but the deputy city attorney died in September. The District 3 seat was not up for grabs this year, but was left vacant when Padilla won election to the state Senate. Most of the council’s discussion centered on what to do with the District 3 vacancy. Some members of the public urged the City Council to consolidate a special election for both seats.
In 2014, former Mayor Mary Casillas Salas vacated her City Council seat to serve as mayor for the first time. Council members then agreed to appoint Steve Miesen, but were sued in the process. The 2015 lawsuit said the City Council violated the Ralph M. Brown Act when council members made their nominations to the city clerk outside of a public meeting.
