Leeds United and Southampton will battle it out for the third and final promotion spot at Wembley tomorrow afternoon
Leeds United will suffer more play-off heartache this weekend. That is the view of former Celtic striker Chris Sutton as the Whites prepare to face Southampton at Wembley.
Daniel Farke's troops booked their place in the showpiece fixture, thrashing Norwich City 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals. It is the fourth time the Whites have reached a play-off final, failing to win promotion in each of the previous three . The Saints saw off West Bromwich Albion in the other semi-final.
United are the bookmakers favourites to reach the Premier League. But speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast this week, Sutton said: “Before a ball was kicked in the play-offs, I thought Southampton would be the team to come back up.“I just think they’ve been so impressive under Russell Martin this season. They have the belief and the momentum. It’s a tough one to call but if I was picking a team, I would fancy Southampton to edge it against Leeds United.
Ex-United defender Ben Parker has backed the club to get the job done and claim the final remaining place in next season’s Premier League after Leicester City and Ipswich Town secured automatic promotion. “Usually these games are cagey but I think it is going to be a good kind of spectacle," he said. "Will there be loads of goals? I can’t see loads of goals but I think with ourselves getting the two clean-sheets, I just think it will give us so much confidence going into it.
