A referendum on Ontario Place, which the city does not own, is not what we need right now
Matlow was recently docked 10 days’ pay by his colleagues for daring to question city staff’s truthfulness on the question of park washrooms being open or not. Matlow was in the right, his colleagues and staff were in the wrong, and he wears that punishment with appropriate pride. Heading into this week, it seemed like Matlow and Saunders could become the de facto standard-bearers on the centre-left and centre-right, respectively.
This dynamic would be frustrating enough if the candidates were hashing out the real issues. And to be fair, there is plenty of time for that to happen.
These certainly ought to be municipal election issues — but maybe one- or two-day election issues. We need to know what each mayoral candidate thinks should and should not happen to these important attractions, and how they’ll try to convince the province to pursue their vision.
