Chris Selley: Progressives for Mayor Chow, prepare to be disappointed via nationalpost
Much of what was in Chow’s platform will likely pass council with little trouble: increased support for renters, raising the land-transfer tax on homes worth more than $3 million, helping Scarborough residents cope with an impending LRT closure by building a dedicated bus lane, etc. A revolutionary or potentially damaging left-wing platform, Chow’s was not.
Chow’s opponents at times accused her of being stuck in the 1990s. That’s not fair in general, I don’t think, but is certainly true in the case of the Gardiner. But many younger Toronto progressives are sick to death of those people and their malign influence on city policy — most notably NIMBY housing policies. Apartment- and condo-dwellers necessarily see public spaces in the city differently than single-family homeowners do — not as recreational opportunities or day trips, but as backyards.Article content
