The host of characters constantly bump into each other, as if New York City were a hamlet with one church, one library, and a handful of restaurants
I wish I could be kinder to Lone Scherfig. The Danish writer/director has done some wonderful things. That includes introducing Mads Mikkelsen to English-speaking audiences in 2002’s Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself, and providing a breakout role for Carey Mulligan in 2009’s An Education.
Alas, transferring this kind of tale from suburban Copenhagen to big-city America – with its crises of health-care, homelessness, police brutality, etc., etc. – takes away much of the whimsy that is Scherfig’s specialty. What do they all have in common? Pretty much everything in a movie where even a discarded office chair manages to be fewer than six degrees of separation from the human characters. But a vital link is Alice , who works as a hospital nurse , helps out at a soup kitchen , runs a 12-step group and frequents the Russian eatery . She’s so busy she never even takes off her scrubs; she just puts a coat on over them.
