Hipkins, 44, must still get an endorsement Sunday from his Labour Party colleagues in Parliament but that is just a formality now.after five-and-a-half years in the top role. Hipkins will have only a little more than eight months in the role before contesting a general election. Ardern announced Thursday that New Zealand's next general elections would be held on Oct. 14, and that she would remain a lawmaker until then.
