CHP members help in so many different ways, while daily risking their lives.

Q: Last week our granddaughter was driving on Interstate 680 in San Jose with her one-year-old girl in a car seat behind her. As she drove in the fast lane near the Berryessa exit, she heard something, then saw the baby vomiting heavily.

Fearing her daughter might choke, she quickly pulled into the center divider area, clear of traffic. She raced around the car, opened the door and was removing the baby from the car seat when a CHP officer suddenly appeared. Surprised, but thankful, she explained the situation and asked if he had paper towels. He did not, but brought her some Clorox Wipes.

The officer was patient and helpful as she cleaned up as well as she could. He waited, watching for traffic, until the baby was secure in her car seat again and our granddaughter was ready to leave. Reassured that all was well, he guided her back onto the road and followed her for several miles. We want to extend our sincerest thanks to him and to all those wonderful CHP members who continue to help in so many different ways, while daily risking their lives.A: The side of a freeway is a very dangerous spot but it sounds like your granddaughter did everything she could to respond quickly yet safely in that frightening situation.

Q: When are the FasTrak lanes on Interstate 680 going to open down the Sunol Grade? I drive it all the time and no one is out there working on it. … Last year, the signs said “TOLLING BEGINS 2021″. Then they said “TOLLING BEGINS SPRING 2022”. Any guess what the signs will say when spring ends in less than 2 months?A: New signs are up. The opening has been pushed back to this fall.
