The incident occurred during the summer of 2021, when an assistant manager at Chipotle repeatedly told the teen worker – who was working as a line server – to remove her hijab and demanded to see her hair. The teen reported the incident, and Chipotle responded by denying her additional work shifts unless she agreed to transfer to a different restaurant location, according to EEOC. She was ultimately forced to submit her two weeks’ notice resignation, the agency claims. EEOC says that Chipotle’s conduct violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination and harassment based on a person’s religious beliefs, and also prohibits retaliation against employees who complain about discriminatory treatment.
