Beipeng Zhang, a Chinese national facing multiple charges related to abalone poaching and processing, had his bail appeal rejected by the Western Cape High Court. Zhang, deemed a 'serial offender' by authorities, was initially granted bail but had it revoked following a re-arrest on further abalone-related charges.
The Western Cape High Court has denied the appeal of a Chinese national, Beipeng Zhang, against the cancellation of his bail. Zhang, branded a ‘serial offender’ by authorities, had been granted R100,000 bail by the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court in 2023 but saw it revoked after his re-arrest on further abalone-related charges,Zhang was initially apprehended on 26 July 2023 in West Beach, Bloubergstrand, for possessing 7 855 units of dried and wet abalone valued at an estimated R2.
However, his troubles escalated on 9 April 2024 when he was arrested in Durbanville for similar offences.
