Changan and Deepal, two Chinese car brands, are entering the South African bakkie market, adding to the growing competition in this sector.

Changan and Deepal , the latest Chinese car brands, have announced their entry into the South Africa n bakkie market. This adds to the already established Chinese presence in the segment, including BYD, Foton, GWM, JAC, and LDV. Changan will focus on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, launching the Hunter bakkie, a twin of the Peugeot Landtrek. Deepal , specializing in new energy vehicles, will introduce an all-electric bakkie.

\While these new entrants likely won't immediately challenge the dominance of the top three local bakkies – the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max – they contribute to a broader trend that could eventually flood the local market, similar to the SUV segment. This could lead to a price war, potentially affecting the sales of the established local manufacturers. The existing bakkies, alongside the Mahindra Pik Up, Nissan Navara, and VW Amarok, are all locally manufactured, and any significant disruption to this sector could have a considerable impact on the South African economy.\ The Changan Hunter will be powered by a 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine, the same engine found in the Peugeot Landtrek. Pricing will be a crucial factor for its success, considering the Peugeot Landtrek's high price compared to other Chinese-built bakkies since its launch in 2021 hasn't resonated strongly with buyers.
