Both Houston’s Bellaire Chinatown and Katy Asian Town have become hubs for both international and local businesses as well as spaces for community building.
But drive west down I-10 and you'll find another booming set of retail centers filled with bakeries, boba shops and bánh mì restaurants. This is Katy Asian Town, a more recent addition to the region that has established itself as a destination for international businesses to enter the Houston market.
While Chinatown grew organically over time, Katy Asian Town was all planned out, Lin said. As a result, you won't find seven boba shops all in one plaza as you would in Chinatown, though there are still plenty of places to grab boba in Katy, all of which are packed on the days where the heat index breaks 100.

Uncle Tetsu was drawn to Katy Grand because the retail center is both"established and growing," said Laura Lund, senior regional real estate manager for Panda Restaurant Group, which has been developing Uncle Tetsu locations in Katy and Austin.Lin doesn't necessarily see Chinatown and Katy Asian Town as competitors — after all, she points out, it takes about 25 minutes to drive between the two, assuming you don't get caught in classic Houston traffic.
