China urges Russia-Ukraine ceasefire as it steps up involvement in conflict

China has called for a ceasefire and gradual de-escalation in Ukraine amid concern from the West that Beijing was considering supplying Russia with arms to assist its invasion of its neighbour

Mr Putin decided earlier this week to temporarily pull out of the New Start arms control treaty with the US – which caps the number of deployed nuclear warheads for both countries.and floated the idea of Russia potentially resuming nuclear testing.

The ambassador of the European Union to China, Jorge Toledo, said China’s paper was not a peace proposal, but the EU would study it. Ukraine called the position paper “a good sign” and said it expects China to be more active in its support of Ukraine.
