China says it will never surrender to external pressure after the US renews its threat to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports in an escalating trade dispute

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang speaks during a daily briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Beijing. January 29, 2019.

Trump has ordered US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to begin imposing tariffs on all remaining imports from China, a move that would affect about an additional $300 billion worth of goods."As for the details, please continue to pay attention," foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a news briefing.

Shares retreated in Asia on Monday after trade talks between the US and China wrapped up without an agreement and with Beijing threatening to retaliate over Trump's latest tariff hike. China said it will retaliate after the US raised tariffs on $200 billion of its exports as of Friday to 25 percent from 10 percent, but had not said how.

"The lack of resolution in the latest US-China trade talks coupled with continued provocative tweets from President Trump provides no relief for risk sentiment as we look to another weak start to the week for Asia markets," Jingyi Pan of IG said in a commentary.
