China, Russia and Iran are conducting joint military exercises in the Gulf of Oman this week as U.S. tensions with each country have risen during the international conflict in Ukraine.

"This exercise will help deepen practical cooperation between the participating countries' navies ... and inject positive energy into regional peace and stability," the ministry statement said. The exercises will begin Wednesday and continue through March 19. They come as U.S. relations with each nation have deteriorated —from the U.S. and its allies by invading Ukraine, China has refused to criticize Moscow and is aiding the Russian economy in defiance of the west, and in Iran's case, there is no relationship to speak of. The U.S. and Iran have been adversaries since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and the Iran hostage crisis.
