SINGAPORE – China is home to 16 of the 20 global regions most vulnerable to climate change, according to data published on Monday, with some of the world’s most important manufacturing hubs at risk from rising water levels and extreme weather.
The study is based on a 3 deg C increase in temperatures by the end of the century, under a scenario drawn up by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. “We’re already feeling the significant impacts of weather events around the world, and they will only increase,” XDI chief executive Rohan Hamden told reporters. “Finally, we just want to make sure that every investment decision is made in a climate-resilient way.”
“Infrastructure investment has tended to be concentrated in areas that have traditionally been very high-risk – river deltas, coastal zones and relatively flat areas,” he said.
