This is a significant advantage as it eliminates the need to transport fuel to Mars, reducing the overall weight and complexity of the mission.
Humans are gearing up to land and explore the Red Planet in the coming years. But with limited resources and harsh conditions, every ounce of weight matters.
A team of scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China has presented a novel solution — a unique battery designed to harness the Martian atmosphere as its fuel during discharge. Moreover, Mars goes through dramatic temperature differences of around 60 degrees Celsius between day and night. The researchers are saying that this battery can directly use the gases in the Martian atmosphere as its fuel source, similar to how a fuel cell works. Instead of storing energy like a regular battery, the Mars battery generates electricity by continuously reacting with chemicals as long as the fuel is available.
The team even simulated the planet’s harsh temperature variations to check its performance. The battery was able to operate at the freezing point of 0°C and exhibited an energy density of 373.9 Wh/kg at this temperature level.
