Children in poverty-stricken homes are less happy than peers, study finds
Meanwhile, the Statistics on Children in SA report by the University of Cape Town reveals that in 2018, there were approximately 55 000 children living in 33 000 child-headed households across South Africa.“While children living in child-headed households are rare relative to those residing in other household forms, the number of children living in this extreme situation is of concern,” reads the report.
The report also finds that black children aged zero to 17 are less likely to stay with their biological fathers compared with their peers in the other population groups. “Grants were more prevalent than salaries as a source of income in Eastern Cape and Limpopo . Remittances as a source of income played an important role in most provinces, but especially in Limpopo , Eastern Cape , North West and Mpumalanga ,” reads the general household survey by Stats SA.Associate Wits University Professor Malose Langa says that most children have social fathers rather than biological fathers because most biological fathers are absent in their children’s lives.
“Although the percentage of absent fathers is very high, research indicates that over the past few years, there is a growing population of young black men who are trying their level best to be fathers.”“When many men and children are asked about what makes a good father, many of them refer to provision – that my father is able to buy things and give me money.”
